Dwayne has significant international experience in coordinating industry-led R&D, interfacing between academic researchers and a variety of stakeholders for coordination of research and commercial outcomes.  He has managed major alliances between industry and research institutions in Australia, USA and UK , and has played key roles in research commercialisation, strategic planning and new business development in both commercial and non-commercial sectors. Through his own research from 1998-2005, Dwayne was a co-inventor of the world’s first licensed commercial vaccine produced by transgenic plant cells and published many peer-reviewed papers describing aspects of downstream processing, regulatory frameworks and bioethics. He has acted as the Manufacturer’s representative for multiple human clinical trials with genetically engineered vaccines and worked closely with regulatory agencies such as the US Department of Agriculture and the US Food and Drug Administration for design and operation of GM plant production facilities.

Dwayne completed his PhD at Arizona State University and combined aspects of plant biotechnology with law and business to develop a framework for assessing commercial feasibility of using plant cells to produce recombinant pharmaceutical proteins.  He returned to Australia in 2006 to develop new activities in research development and research commercialization in the Faculty of Science at Monash University before stepping into his role with the Institute for Nanotechnology. Dwayne is leading the development of several strategic initiatives at Monash University , including Biomedical Imaging and nanotechnology applications for sensors, diagnostics and drug delivery.
